Winning Online Sit N Go Poker Tournaments -Yesterday’s post talked about some simple strategies for playing in SnG’s and how to end up in the money more often than not. Today I want to touch briefly on what to do if you are busting out of SnG’s too much early on, and finally how to actually win instead of just finishing in the money.First, if you find yourself busting out of small SnG’s early on, you are probably either: A) playing too many hands and getting involved with hands your cannot win, or B) getting involved in too many coin flips early on.Sound simple? It is. Many players play way too loose early on in tournaments and they end up playing to the River with something like middle pair or high pair with a junk-kicker. The key to not over-estimating your hand is simply to tighen up and play better hands. You are not going to win it in the initial stages anyway, relax and wait until you are closer to the money.
The second thing that so many players do is get all their chips (or a significant portion) in early on with hands that are too close to a coin flip. In other words, they are not as heavy a favorite as they think they are. There is no need to risk your tournament life on hands where you are only a 60-40 favorite early in the tournament Dewapoker. If you think you are getting your money in good when you have A-T and you are up against K-J, then you need to spend some time with an odds calculator to find out just how much of a favorite (or not) you really are. I see players all the time push with A-K and find themselves on the rail after running into pocket 6’s. Do you really want to risk the tournament with A-high where you are a 55%-45% favorite? If your answer is yes, you are not making money.
So, once you have addressed these simple points and you find yourself passing the bubble and making money, you want to focus on winning the tournament. This will most times require the exact opposite strategy that you employee early on. This is the point where you start raising, taking risks and building your stack. Push the other players around and force them to make tough decisions. Seriously, I get to the money so often and play against players who are scared to make a move and just want to wait for good cards. Folks, this is how you lose tournaments and find yourself being dominated by a chip stack 4-5 times that of your own.Once you have made the money, sitting and waiting for cards is the absolute worst thing you can do. At this point, if you play “go fish” or see who is dealt the best hand, you will not win tournaments. You must play aggressively, with less than premium hands if you want to win. Playing tight up until the money will usually work, but it will kill you later on. Don’t make this mistake and you will find yourself dominating with the big chip stack, rather than fighting to stay in it, waiting for those pocket Q’s or K’s!
